Leadership

Mr. David Shanks begins his first year as Principal of Normandy Middle School at Lucas Crossing. With more than 17 years of experience in education, Mr. Shanks is committed to fostering a safe, supportive, and engaging learning environment where every scholar is empowered to succeed. He believes strong partnerships between families, educators, and the community are essential to student achievement.

Mr. Shanks began his career as a middle school mathematics teacher at a Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) school in the City of St. Louis, where he taught sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade mathematics. After earning two master's degrees from the University of Missouri, he joined St. Louis Public Schools as the K–12 Mathematics Coordinator, leading curriculum and instructional initiatives to improve student learning and achievement.

Throughout his career, Mr. Shanks has served in several leadership roles, including Behavior Interventionist, Assistant Principal, Principal, and Alternative School Director. His diverse experiences have strengthened his commitment to creating positive school cultures that support the academic, social, and emotional growth of every scholar.

As Principal of Normandy Middle School at Lucas Crossing, Mr. Shanks is dedicated to building meaningful relationships with students, families, and staff while preparing scholars for success in high school, college, careers, and beyond.
